It’s that time of year again, where we set our New Year’s Resolutions. For many of us, weight loss is on the list. For some of us, the first week is almost done and we’ve already given up for another year!
If you want to make your weight loss goals a reality, here are some decisions you have to make:
1. Is it that important to you? You have to decide if losing weight is important enough for you to change your way of life. You are faced with many decisions each day that will affect your ability to lose weight. You have to be willing to change your lifestyle, to make some challenging decisions every day.
2. What is your game plan? If you’ve decided that it’s important enough, you need to come up with a solid plan. Saying you’re going to go to the gym and eat well is not good enough. You need to be specific and put together a roadmap for yourself to follow. Decide what activities you are going to do, how often and how long. Write down what you are eating. How often do you eat out, how often do you pick up something on the way home, how often do you make your meals and what do you make? Look at your schedule and decide what you can change. Be careful to keep your game plan REALISTIC. You need to make changes for the long haul, not for the short term.
3. What is your motivation? The journey to lose weight is a long term commitment. Along the way you will constantly be challenged. You need to know why you doing this. It’s important to you, but why? Do you want to look & feel your best for an important occasion, do you want to get off your high blood pressure medication, do you want to be able to join your kids in their activities? Find what your motivation will be. Write it down and keep it with you. Post it up if that will help serve as a reminder.
4. Who is on your team? Make sure that you are not trying to tackle this on your own. Decide if you want to enlist professional help, through a trainer or nutritionist. If you’re not sure where to start, a professional can be a great asset to putting together the game plan for you to follow. Decide who will be your support network. Who will you call when you’re about to eat a bag of cookies? Who will you depend on to get you to the gym? Who will you lean on when you don’t think you can keep going?
5. Will you be responsible? YOU are responsible for your ability to reach your goals or not. You can enlist help to get you there, but ultimately it’s up to you, whether you get there or not. If you are following your plan and you are not seeing results, then you need to look at other options (ie. medical issues). Only you know if you are giving yourself the best you’ve got. You are responsible for doing what you can and making changes if it’s not working. Giving up is not taking responsibility!
Make this the year you actually get what you want. Set yourself up for success by putting together a plan, be patient and take responsibility for your actions.
Happy New Year! Cheers to a great 2012.
